This site collects research notes and analysis on the biomechanics of the golf swing and related topics in multibody dynamics and control theory.
My name is Dieter Olson. I am a chemical engineer by training and work in industrial research and development. This is a personal biography, not independent evidence for the scientific claims published on the site.
I have long been interested in the science behind the golf swing and the application of engineering principles to biomechanics. Through study of the golf biomechanics literature—including the foundational work of Cochran & Stobbs (1968), Jorgensen (1970), and Nesbit (2005), as well as control theory texts by Isidori, Tedrake, and Murray et al.—I became engaged in applying nonlinear control theory and multibody dynamics to understand the swing at a deeper level. My research interests include robotics control, multibody modeling, parallel mechanisms, and the interaction of passive dynamics with active control—the namesake of this website. The central question: how much of observed motion can be attributed to the system's autonomous dynamics (drift) versus active muscular input (control)?
Scope: AffineDrift publishes model-conditioned analysis and editorial synthesis. A model's drift/input partition does not uniquely identify muscle forces, neural intent, coaching advice, or clinical effect. Those interpretations require additional measurements and validation.
