Forward Dynamics Matching
Publication and Evidence Status
Local research manuscript, 2026-10-05. This book has been assembled for AffineDrift publication. It has not yet been deployed to affinedrift.com, rendered through the repository’s Quarto pipeline, or independently peer reviewed. External link validation remains incomplete because GitHub returned an API quota error and the repository requires stopping network activity. The reference and verification ledger records these limits.
The source review pins UpstreamDrift to revision d7c7d07add0d7407a5a3376d5fe4a97aee9112a0. It separates implemented algorithms, stored test and experiment evidence, historical failures, and proposed improvements. Native engines and empirical subject measurements were not executed in this review. A proposed adaptive model is a research design, not a delivered matcher.

The Central Question
Can a declared mechanical model, admissible actuation, and one initial state reproduce recorded motion while satisfying physical constraints? A convincing answer requires more than a close animation: observation semantics, numerical consistency, uninterrupted replay, uncertainty, and independently tested prediction all matter.
The book develops that question from measurement and inverse dynamics through shooting, collocation, state estimation, differentiable simulation, muscle-driven tracking, learned proposals, and adaptive model selection. Its focus is improving model-constrained matching without confusing fitted shape, physical degrees of freedom, latent memory, and control representation.
How to Read the Book
Start with the problem formulation and the two UpstreamDrift review chapters for the shortest route to current capabilities and gaps. Read the classical methods before the adaptive chapters if trajectory estimation is unfamiliar. The final design and synthesis chapters combine those foundations into a proposed implementation and research program.
Each chapter includes assumptions, failure modes, worked arguments, and exercises with solution sketches. Mathematical examples are synthetic or derived. Historical numerical values are attributed to checked-in upstream receipts and remain conditional on their recorded model and run.

What the Adaptive Design Adds
The proposed learner adapts a restricted physical geometry before interpreting dynamics, profiles out compensating controls and calibration variables, and compares registered structures on independent trials. It reports data information separately from prior information and retains compatible alternatives when the observations cannot distinguish them.
No new production code is introduced in this publication change. The engineering chapter specifies tests-first implementation, design by contract, the Law of Demeter, and shared logic for future code. The source audit does not certify existing upstream code as uniformly compliant with those principles.
